Some local stores also have wood and they're listed in the binder in the cabin. Do not transport firewood in from another county. Firewood can be found at the camp ground near the cabins by the "host site" trailer for $6/a bundle. I would bring some tin foil to put over the grill grate. Outside there is a picnic table and a fire ring with a grill that goes over top of it. If your dog sheds a lot, bring a sheet to put on the futon. We never left him alone but if you do you must crate or gate them up in a kennel like enclosure. Ours did fine and loved the park and the cabin. Bring a radio for background noise if you want it as there isn't one inside. The area stays quiet for the most part though the other cabins are close by. If the weather is questionable, we brought some crosswords to do together and books to read. The bathroom with shower and toilet is attached to bedroom with a wood sliding door. The bedroom had a small queen size bed (bring your own blankets, sheets, and pillows) and a sink. Bring hand soap, spray cleaner, SPONGES, and dish soap. I would bring an extra frying pan, spatula and paper plates and plastic utensils/cups, paper towels, garbage bags, plastic grocery sacks. Floor is concrete throughout and easy to clean when leaving (mop/broom provided). There was a table with chairs, a futon and end table. Living room/kitchen area was spacious and updated with fridge, granite counter top, sink, stove/oven, coffee maker and microwave. I'll do this in two parts: Cabin and Park. We rented a $50 cabin and we had our 1 year old dachshund with us as well. We took a two day trip to Backbone State Park and rented a cabin. All in all, an awesome family vacation spot! I would totally recommend it! But this place would be awesome for fishing and kayaking! Next time! The stars were awesome at night and we saw a ton of satellites too! Town is close so if you need supplies, it's a quick trip. I think I hiked 15 miles that weekend! There are a couple of Must-Do Adventures in the park-Backbone Trail and the Cave! Be careful of icy conditions in the winter/spring on the Backbone Trail, and be sure to bring flashlights and kneepads for the cave! We went back as far as we could before having to belly crawl and we even got to see some bats! Geocaching was fun too! One Earth Cache along the Backbone Trail and the oldest geocache in the state of Iowa off trail further in the park. The North and East Gates were still closed for the season, but you can still hike in to the Backbone Trail, Richmond Springs, the Cave, old Fish Hathery, and more. The East Lake Trail is located right behind the cabin and can connect to most of the other trails. Equipped with a bed, a futon, full kitchen including (refrigerator/stove/microwave/oven/coffee pot), and a standing shower, it was a perfect place to come back to after a full day of hiking and exploring! Beach with playground and concession was closed for the season, but it was okay.
